The cheers in the stands slowly faded, and the numbers on the scoreboard, marking the end of the match, stopped moving. Cha Minjae, having taken the final point, lowered the tip of his blade and caught his breath as his coach’s brief shout of joy reached him late.

“It’s over.”
After taking off his mask, Minjae gave his opponent a brief greeting and came down. The hand taking the water bottle was still trembling slightly with lingering tension, but his expression was already as indifferent as usual.
Reporters rushed in, thrusting cameras and microphones at him. Questions about the gold medal and his thoughts on winning kept coming, and Minjae answered in a few short words with a nod.
